Newly Updated Walmart Coupon Policy

by Sandy on July 1, 2011

Walmart LogoWalmart has been making quite a few changes this year to their coupon policy and it has been very beneficial for their buisness.  It looks as though Walmart is finally listening to us!!  YAY!  :)   Now can we get double and triple coupons in the Houston market Walmart?  Please…I ask beg very nicely!  ;) The biggest changes to their coupon policy are below (this is not their full policy), you can find the full coupon policy at the end of this post.

So let’s get started!

Walmart accepts the following types of coupons:

  • Competitors’ coupons that feature a specific item for a specified price (for example, $2.99)
  • Buy one, get one free (BOGO) coupons for items with a specified price
  • Checkout coupons (also called “Catalinas”) that are printed at our competitors’ registers, have “Manufacturer Coupon” with specific requirements printed on them, a valid remit address for the manufacturer, valid expiration date, and a scannable bar code.

This means that you can use competitor coupons that are for a price listed directly on the coupon.  You cannot use a coupon for a dollar off value.  The new policy also specifies that you can use Catalina coupons from a competitors’ register.  Walmart is also accepting BOGO coupons and price matching with a specified price.  This means if your local competitor store has X product on sale this week for BOGO and the price is listed for the product in the ad, Walmart will price match the product and you will still get the other specified product for the sale price as a BOGO.  On top of the price matched sale, you can also use coupons just like you were shopping in the competitor store.

Walmart does not accept the following coupons:

  • Checkout coupons for dollars/cents off the entire basket purchase, a percentage off the entire basket purchase, or print-at-home Internet coupons that require no purchase
  • Competitors’ coupons for dollars/cents off at a specific retailer, percentage off, buy one, get one free (BOGO) coupons without a specified price, or double- or triple-value coupons

This means that you can’t use a coupon for a free product that is printed at home.  Most companies are changing their policy to actually mail out these coupons instead of having them as a printable coupon.  If the competitor ad does not specify the price of a BOGO sale, Walmart will not price match the products sale price.

The following are guidelines and limitations:

  • Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.
  • No limit to the amount of coupons that can be used in one transaction

My favorite part of the policy!! If the product is $0.97 and you have a $1 off the specified product, the value of the coupon WILL NOT be adjusted down to accommodate the difference to your total basket price.YAY!!

I highly recommend that you print the new Walmart Coupon Policy and take it with you simply because some store employees and management may not be informed of the policy properly or may give you grief over the new changes.  There is also a printable pdf of the Walmart Coupon Policy HERE you can print also.

Happy Walmarting!!

I was so upset when my cashier would not take my ‘catalina’ coupon that was printed from a register at a Vons. It was clearly labeled as a manufacurer’s coupon and I explained to them that they would get reimbursed! They didn’t care and were so focused on the fact that it said “Vons”. Grrr… Glad they figured it all out!

I noticed their new policy a few months ago and have definitely been using it to my advantage. I make sure to take the policy with me each and every time, because as we all know, Walmart cashiers aren’t usually trained on the coupon issues and CAN cause us some issues, but I’ve noticed they’re getting better…maybe because this policy is so much more easy for them to follow and understand…plus, it’s pretty straight forward. So far, for the past few months at St. Louis area Walmarts, I’ve not had ANY issues using catalinas, even the ones that are money savings off entire purchase. I agree…YAYS! btw, I just found your blog, LOVE it!!

Is the doubling and tripling coupons only at one walmart or all walmarts in the houston area? Have they said what doubles and what triples?
Sorry for all the questions. So excited to hear this!!

In some areas of the US Walmart does double and triple coupons, but Walmart does not double or triple in the Houston market. I was only asking if Walmart would please bring it to the area in case they were reading!! A girl can hope, right?!?! :)

I heard the ad mach policy changed too! Only match 3 items per transaction? is this true?

I have never heard about only 3 price matches per transactions. According to their commercials, they will price match anything and I have never had any problems ad matching more than 3 per transaction. Their ad match guarantee does not specify any limits. So I would have to say that its not true unless your particular store has set limits. The limit of 3 may be for “like” products.
